Our NAME
The company name CYBERNESIS is born out of a portmanteau of the words “Cyber” and “Genesis”. Let’s explore these a little.
The word “Cyber” has it origins in the word Cybernetics coined in 1948 by U.S. mathematician Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) relating to the “theory or study of communication and control”. It is a latinized version of the Greek word kybernetes meaning “steersman” (metaphorically “guide, governor”), from kybernan “to steer or pilot a ship, direct as a pilot,” figuratively “to guide, govern”. Robert Stephen Paul Beekes, a Dutch linguist agreed that ” the word has no cognates” and concludes “Foreign origin is probable.” The construction is perhaps based on 1830s French cybernétique “the art of governing.”
Ultimately Cyber has three important fundamentals,
- It is a prefix to many, i.e cyber-age, cybernetics, cybersecurity. Cyber MUST come first.
- The modern word “Cyber” is related to computers, information technology, and virtual reality.
- Born out of the Greek word Kubernetes, it must be appreciated that guidance and governance are an art.
The word “Genesis” is directly translated from Greek as “Origin”. It relates to the very start of something. Its birth. The first book of the Hebrew bible and Christian Old Testament, Genesis fully embodies the beginning of time, the dawn of ages.
CYBERNESIS, amalgamates these two words leaning on the strong roots of governance, guidance and anything digital. All too often security and governance take a back bench and are incorporated as an afterthought. At Cybernesis we believe that good governance and security should take the lead in all digital endeavours, from startups to large complex digital transformations, Governance must be the forerunner.
It is our desire and commitment to realise these fundamentals in action, adding value to all our stakeholders. Upon this desire we have developed the belief that in the beginning there was technology and it was inherently insecure & then there was a bridge between insecure technology and secure technology, and it was called CYBERNESIS
